How to Use Lavender Hydrosol: 15 Ideas for Skin, Home, and Sleep

Not sure how to use lavender hydrosol? Here are 15 easy ideas for skincare, linens, laundry, DIY recipes, and more, from Little Bear Lavender Farm.

Lavender hydrosol is one of the most versatile things I make on the farm. It's the fragrant water collected when I steam distill lavender flowers for essential oil, and it's much gentler than essential oil. You can mist it, mix it, and spritz it almost anywhere.

If you just picked up a bottle and wonder what to do with it, here are 15 ideas.

For Skin and Body

Little Bear’s Angustifolia Hydrosol is the best choice for these suggested uses, thanks to its soft, sweet scent. Always patch test first.

1. Facial toner. After cleansing, close your eyes and mist your face. Let it air dry or pat gently.

2. Midday face refresh. Keep a bottle at your desk and mist over makeup or bare skin for a cooling reset.

3. After-sun mist. Keep it in the fridge and spritz skin after a day outdoors for a cool, comforting feel.

4. Shave and post-shave splash. Mist freshly shaved skin for a light, clean finish.

5. Hair and scalp refresh. Mist hair between washes for light fragrance, or spritz your scalp and massage it in.

6. Body mist. Use it as a light, natural perfume alternative. The scent is soft and fades gently.

For Sleep and Relaxation

7. Pillow spray. Mist your pillow and sheets from about 8 inches away a few minutes before bed. Many of my customers make this part of their nightly wind-down.

8. Bath and shower finish. Mist the bathroom walls or your towel before you step in for a spa-like touch.

9. Desk and bag aromatherapy. Keep a small bottle within reach. A quick spritz makes a good pause during a long day.

For Your Home

Lavandin hydrosol works especially well here, with its brighter, stronger scent.

10. Room spray. Mist the air in living rooms, bedrooms, and entryways. Unlike many commercial air fresheners, there's no synthetic fragrance.

11. Linen and couch spray. Lightly mist sheets, blankets, pillows, and upholstery. Test on a hidden spot first for delicate fabrics.

12. Laundry and ironing spray. Mist clothes before pressing, or add a splash to your iron's water tank (check your iron's instructions first).

13. Car and closet freshener. Mist car seats, floor mats, closets, and drawers.

For DIY Makers

14. Natural cleaning sprays. Use it as the water base in homemade surface sprays and mop water.

15. Skincare and body care recipes. Hydrosol makes a lovely water phase for lotions, creams, and sprays. Because hydrosol is water-based, add a suitable preservative to any recipe you plan to keep for more than a few days.

Simple Recipe: Lavender Linen Spray

- 1 cup lavender hydrosol (angustifolia for softness, lavandin for strength).

- Pour into an 8oz spray bottle and shake well.

- Store in the fridge or in a cool dark space and use within 9 months.

That's it. Because our hydrosol is the pure distillate, you don't need to add anything else for a light linen mist.

Tips for Using Hydrosol

- Shake gently before each use.

- Store in a cool and dark space. Refrigerating extends freshness and feels great on skin.

- Keep it away from eyes, and keep pets from being sprayed directly. Lavender can be irritating for some animals, especially cats.

- Buy the 16 oz spray bottle for occasional use.

- Buy the 32 oz jug if you’ll use it often. It’s perfect for refilling your spray bottle and costs less per ounce.
